What are "Growth Groups"?

Growth Groups are groups of 12-15 persons who get together for 10-13 weeks to study Scripture and to grow in their walk with God. In this environment, new friendships are formed, and “community” begins to happen. Over the 2½ to 3 months that the group exists, you will study together, do a couple of service projects together, and have at least one fun social event together.

The reality is that we grow best in our relationship with God when we are in community.

How do I Register for a Growth Group?

There are three ways to register for a group: 1) Write the “group code” on your Connection Card at worship; 2) Register through our website by clicking the link below; or 3) Register at the “Growth Groups” table in the lobby at church before or after worship. There is a registration form on each page for each Growth Group.

When does Fall Semester 2009 Begin?

The semester begins on Monday, September 14. "First meetings" will take place September 14-20, depending on which day of the week your group meets. All groups will complete the semester by December 12. 

Thanksgiving Break is November 23-27. All groups which are meeting at a time other than Sunday morning will meet 12 times this semester. Sunday morning groups will meet 13 times, since they will also meet the week of Thanksgiving.

This Sunday's Message: Uncommon Courtesy

Over the past year, the stock market has dropped about 40%. Economists, politicians, and business leaders continue to forecast gloom and doom. But as Christians, we have hope. The series is "Optimism Matters."

This week, we will look at the power of what many once considered to be "common." We'll look at "Uncommon Courtesy."

There are plenty of reasons for pessimism and depression these days. But through Christ, there is hope. This message describes the difference that optimism makes — not just a "positive attitude" — but a hope based upon a powerful and loving God.

Construction Continues Despite Two Hurricanes

This picture was taken Tuesday as a crew was digging out the footers on our new building for a second time (once following each hurricane). Another crew, in another location, was preparing the steal rebar mats that will be placed in the pad. The pad should be poured next week. Although the hurricanes have caused delays, those delays are measured as a few days rather than months.

In the photo, you can see the plastic sheets used to keep our site as dry as possible. While there was a lot of flooding in the vicinity of the new campus, our property remained dry.

As for the closing on the Fourth Avenue campus, hurricanes have caused delays there as well. Attorneys are working to remedy a few issues. We completed all necessary paperwork on our side in the week between the hurricanes, and we are waiting for a response from one institution on behalf of the church purchasing our campus. It is a local firm, and so we anticipate that the wait will be short. We hope to be able to move to closing next week.

Return to Normal Church Schedule

The Tuesday prayer group met this morning. Tutoring will resume on Wednesday afternoon. And our Lay Institute for Equipping will meet Wednesday night. Our schedule is returning to normal.

Life After Ike

Over the past two weeks, we have seen hurricanes bring devastation to communities to our east, west, and south. Yet, Lake Charles has been largely spared.

For our friends who live away from the Lake Charles area, Hurricane Gustav brought damage to much of Louisiana, cutting a swath from the southeast to the northwestern portions of the state. Then, Hurricane Ike, a large hurricane with hurricane-force winds stretching to Lake Charles, brought great devastation to our west. Although the winds in Lake Charles were substantial, things have been nailed down and repaired since Hurricane Rita in 2005, and the wind damage seems to be light. Hurricane Ike was more a flooding event from the storm surge than a wind event for us.

Nothing in Lake Charles is much over 15' above sea level, and some of us live much lower than that. Yet, to date, it appears that all church property and the homes of our families have been largely spared from major damage.

To our knowledge, the one major exception to that has been the Vincent fish camp on Moss Lake, which was to have been the location for two church events this past weekend. As of yesterday, it is still inaccessible, so the damage has not been determined. Yet, we know that it was in an area that received 10+ feet of storm surge.

For our friends away from Lake Charles, thank you for your prayers and expressions of concern on our behalf. It appears that we have been largely spared. We anticipate assisting our neighbors to the south and west for many months.

Hurricane Ike Clean Up

A group of hardy souls met at the church for prayer and worship this past Sunday. Following that, many traveled around our community, cleaning the yards of those of us who evacuated.

It is a disquieting experience to drive up to one's home for the first time after an evacuation. Even if one anticipates light damage, it is still something of an anxious experience.

How nice it was to gain a first sight of your home with a house intact, and with fallen branches on the curb, already prepared for pick up! For that group of hardy souls: Thank you! It was a real blessing. It was a sign of God's care and of the love of his people.
